Background

Over 20 years ago a skilled team of Radius staff were involved in the logistics of the rollout of ‘Connect’, London Underground’s radio, transmission, and operational CCTV communications technology. This system is used daily by the Transport for London (TfL) staff, who rely on this expansive network for its operational communications above and below ground, as well as the emergency services, through the Airwave network. When the system came to the end of its operational life and needed upgrading, we were privileged to be instructed by our client Thales GTSUK to work on the same system, to plan, and safely implement the replacement of all the radio (EBTS) communication infrastructure to the latest version of hardware.

Radius supported Thales in their bid to win the scheme and once successful, works took place over a 2.5 year period, to complete the upgrade of over 290 locations for our London based client.

Overview

Radius supplied warehousing, logistics and specialist lifting for each site, which were in turn individually surveyed to plan a site specific safe and cost effective solution. 99% of the works were carried out during the night in a tight 4 hour window, commonly known as an engineering shift. Failure to deliver in this window would have affected the running of the underground network the next day.

Radius used a number of installation methods ranging from the traditional Stair Robot, Escalator Sledge (the only approved escalator sledge capable of moving 450 Kgs on the underground escalator system) some complicated lifts using Alloy Gantry, Hoists, Spider Cranes, Mobile Cranes and an Engineering Train. This project was completed safely, on programme and within budget by the Radius team.

Radius has extensive knowledge of all aspects of the London Underground System, including locations within the stations, and the stringent procedures needed to work in the Underground environment. Our skilled team has a staggering combined 100 years of knowledge and experience on the Underground system, and worked closely with Thales GTSUK to ensure all standards were met and passed on every site.  Using their knowledge of the previous roll-out, new techniques, and enhancement of our new equipment, the Radius team completed all jobs seamlessly.

Our in-house teams are all fully qualified to work on Rail and Underground, trained & certified in safe handling, confined spaces, abnormal loads, specialist equipment handling, and all the essential skills necessary in heavy engineering.

The knowledge, experience and tools that Radius brought to this critical programme, ensured that a significant number of risks were mitigated, including working in snow, wind, rain, narrow platforms, escalators, stairs to name a few . Delivering this upgrade without issue, was testament to the professionalism of everyone in the Radius organisation, at all times. I have no doubt that we will be using Radius again when faced with a similar challenge, when safety, time and quality are of the essence.
