Terex Demag, Luffer Configuration
At Radius Group we thoroughly enjoy a challenge and this project in East London’s bustling Brick Lane proved to be just that. Five generators and associated mechanical plant including five chiller units and 4 transformers had to be lifted and positioned onto a steel deck at roof-level, to provide an immediate backup power system for a new interxion data centre, built by Palfreyman Power.
With access to the site extremely challenging and positions for a crane seemingly non-existent, a helicopter was deemed necessary for the operation and so Radius was brought in to manage the ground operations. However, when it later transpired that a helicopter was not a viable option; and all alternative solutions had been exhausted, Radius came up with the answer.
The existing street furniture identified in the swept path analysis as potential clashes were removed in conjunction with the local authorities.
With only two days of minimal disruption, Brick Lane was back to its usual thriving business and we at Radius Group were delighted to have risen so successfully to the challenge of a project that many thought was simply not possible.
Working in close consultation with Palfreyman Power we were able to reassure them that – with our comprehensive plan of action – we could manage the entire lifting project for them safely, on time and well within their original budget. To ensure no damage to the surrounding footpaths or structures, a temporary road was prepared on top of the pavement areas for the crane and other operational vehicles to travel on.
