Radius provided a bespoke lifting solution to safely remove and replace a 122kg electric motor from an Air Handling Unit (AHU) at St Barts Hospital, London. By engineering a specialist davit arm, we eliminated manual handling risks, ensured full LOLER compliance, and delivered a seamless, disruption-free operation within a live hospital environment.
Challenge & Solution
Following a comprehensive site survey and early engagement with the SKANSKA Technical Manager, our team identified the challenges associated with removing a heavy motor at height from a confined space. To mitigate these risks, we engineered a bespoke lifting solution involving the installation of a specialist davit arm. This innovative approach eliminated the need for any manual handling, ensuring the safety and well-being of our workforce and providing a Maintenance and Replacement Strategy for our client.
Execution and Outcome
The davit arm was load and proof tested adhering to the stringent requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), with certification issued to the client. Our Lift Supervisor and Slinger/Signaller executed the lift according to a detailed lift plan, ensuring precision and safety. The specialised plant handling system then transported the motor along the designated route without disruption to hospital operations. The project was completed on time, within budget, and with zero incidents. Our innovative lifting solution not only resolved a significant operational challenge but also provided a safer, more efficient maintenance strategy for the client, enhancing the operational efficiency of the AHU at St Barts Hospital.
