Project Overview
The Challenge
An 18.0te Generator too heavy to remove as a completed unit located on the 17th floor of a fully operational building, adjacent to a live helipad. The project involved the specialist removal and reinstallation of a backup Generator from the 17th-floor plant room — a high-risk lift and shift operation with tight access, significant height, and complex logistics. Following a successful removal in the summer of 2024, the generator underwent refurbishment and testing, before the team returned to complete the final stage of the project: the lift and reinstallation. However, we could not reply on the weather despite clear skies and good visibility, high winds at roof level posed a constant threat to the lift. This required ongoing monitoring to ensure a safe window of opportunity.
The Solution
In its entirety, the Generator had a combined weight of 18.0te. Our in-house team developed a comprehensive scheme to break down the generator into its individual components comprising of an Alternator (7.00te), Engine Block (7.00te), Radiator (2.00te), and a Base Frame (2.00te) before moving each item out on to the roof, and then being lifted to the ground some 87m below.
Plant handling solution and full contract lift planning, covering lift logistics, traffic management, RAMS, and coordination — enabling the Generator to be safely and efficiently installed into place.
