Project Overview 

Radius Group successfully executed the replacement of a redundant 6.30te Cast Resin transformer for RJ Power at Linklaters in Silk Street, London. Since the original transformer was installed, buildings such as this, have become more complex, requiring the replacement of old transformers to improve safety, comfort, and functionality. Modern buildings need energy-efficient services, which are crucial for environmental sustainability, but can complicate the removal and installation of industrial, mechanical, electrical, and communication equipment. Upgrading transformers is essential to meet these new demands and ensure everything works efficiently.

Assessment and Planning

Following our initial dimensional survey, Radius Group provided meticulous assistance in addressing the unique tasks and critical areas of the project. Through collaboration and engagement with Client, Principal Contractor, End User and OEM, height, width & floor loading restrictions were highlighted along the designated route, with vast experience in managing and handling intricate lifting projects, Radius Group provided a custom solution to overcome obstacles and progress towards the end goal.

Design of Bespoke Lifting & Skidding System

With proprietary & conventional methods unable to work safely within the site constraints, Radius designed a tailored 7.00te runway beam lifting system for the vertical transfer of loads between the building’s floor levels.
Manufactured and fabricated by our in-house specialists, our site team installed, tested & certified the lifting equipment, adhering and complying with lifting operations safety & regulations while ensuring compatibility with existing building infrastructure and site logistics. In addition, we provided a bespoke steel skidding system to provide a seamless horizontal transfer for the transformers to mitigate the slab loading restrictions.

Lifting & Movement Expertise

Radius Group received the transformer directly from the OEM at our headquarters in Northampton, securely stored and then delivered prompt to site using Radius FORS Silver Transport to meet the programme timings. The transformer replacement involved use of Versa Lift, A Frame Gantry’s, Specialist Load Moving Skates and devising a personalised approach to overcome site challenges, effectively ensuring the deliverables were within time, cost and quality limitations.
