Potain MRH175

This tower crane dismantle in London marked the successful completion of Radius Group’s full tower crane package at 160 Blackfriars Road.

Radius provided the tower crane package for Ellmer Construction at the 160 Blackfriars Road development in Central London, supporting the construction of the new 222-bedroom Motel One hotel. Installed in February 2025, the Potain MRH175 hydraulic luffing jib tower crane remained on site for 56 weeks. Throughout the project, Radius was responsible for the installation, servicing, maintenance and statutory inspections of the crane before returning to complete its final dismantle as construction reached completion.

The dismantle was carried out during a planned weekend road closure between Friday evening – Sunday evening. Located in the heart of Central London, the site offered very little working space. The narrow road restricted the positioning of the mobile crane, transport vehicles and support equipment, while mature trees along the street required trimming before the operation could begin.

With a limited working window and confined site conditions, the dismantle sequence, transport movements and lifting operations were all planned in advance to ensure the programme could be completed safely within the allocated road closure.

Tower Crane Dismantle Operation

A Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1 mobile crane, supplied by Emerson Crane Hire and configured with 134 tonnes of counterweight and a 56-metre luffing jib, was used to remove the Potain MRH 175, configured with a 50-metre hydraulic luffing jib.

Traffic management was delivered by National Traffic Solutions (NTS), enabling the operation to be carried out safely within the planned weekend road closure. The dismantle followed a carefully planned sequence, with close coordination between Radius’ engineering department, transport teams, TfL, site personnel and Ellmer Construction throughout the weekend.

Result

The operation was completed safely and to programme, allowing Blackfriars Road to reopen on schedule.

Successfully delivering the project required detailed engineering, careful logistical planning and close collaboration between all project partners. It demonstrates the level of expertise needed to undertake tower crane dismantles in constrained city-centre environments, where access, traffic management and programme all have to be managed alongside the lifting operation itself.

The dismantle itself took place over a single weekend, but the planning started well before that. Working within a restricted road closure on a busy London TFL route and such a confined working area, meant every lift and vehicle movement had to be planned in advance. Once we got to site, the team delivered the operation exactly as intended. A special thank you to our key suppliers and stake holders which supported to facilitate a smooth and safe operation.
