Celebrating Our First Tower Crane Installation in Northampton

After 16 years of delivering expert lifting solutions across the UK, Radius Group is bringing its first-ever tower crane to Northampton – the place where our journey began. This is a significant moment for our team. We are supplying and managing tower cranes on major developments in London, Manchester,  Milton Keynes, Birmingham, and Bristol, to name just a few. But now, for the first time, we are supporting a local project, right here in our hometown – a milestone that means a great deal to us.

Supporting a Key Local Development

Our tower crane has been erected at the College Street development, a project led by Zone Developments that will be bringing 101 new student apartments to Northampton. Located behind the former Debenhams site, (and opposite the recently constructed Drapery Student Accommodation) the development will transform a previously disused brownfield site into modern, high-quality housing for University of Northampton students.

Our tower crane will play a crucial role in efficiently lifting and delivering materials, being an integral part of the build as the five-story building takes shape and ensuring smooth progress throughout the construction process.

Rob Dyson, Construction Manager of Zone Developments shares his experience working with us: “I must say Radius have been a pleasure to work with and the whole process was seamless. Glad to have it up and start using it now!”

For this project, we selected the Potain MRH 125, a state-of-the-art high-speed electric hydraulic luffing jib crane, which is on hire for 28 weeks. Given that the project site is in a dense area of Northampton’s town centre, we erected a luffer to prevent oversailing neighbouring properties when the crane was out of use. With a 35m jib length, the MRH 125 provides the perfect balance of reach, efficiency, and safety in this urban environment.

Having spent years working on high-profile projects across the country, we are excited to finally see one of our cranes standing tall in Northampton, the place where our company was founded.

Michael Fryer, Managing Director of Radius Group, expressed his pride in reaching this milestone: “Installing our first tower crane in Northampton was a proud moment for Radius Group. We have been part of major projects across the UK, but bringing our expertise home was something special. This is an exciting development for the town, and we are thrilled to play a role in shaping its future.”
